Is Rosemary Essential Oil Good for Hair Growth?

Rosemary is both a culinary and a medicinal herb. This woody perennial is native to the Mediterranean region, where it has been used for centuries as a food and medicine.

Rosemary, like oregano, peppermint, and cinnamon, is commonly found in essential oil form. Essential oils are distilled extracts of volatile plant compounds that are highly concentrated. These are used for a variety of purposes, including cooking, cleaning, beauty, and health.

Rosemary essential oil is a popular type that can be purchased and used as a home remedy. The oil's health benefits range from antioxidants and anti-inflammation to memory enhancement and other benefits.

There have been claims in recent years that oil is beneficial to hair growth. Some claim it can even prevent hair loss, citing the use of rosemary in hair rinses to promote hair growth in Mediterranean cultures for hundreds of years as evidence.

Can rosemary oil be used to treat hair loss?

The notion that rosemary oil promotes hair growth may stem from rosemary's basic health benefits. The plant, in the form of essential oil, is said to:

have anti-inflammatory effects

encourage nerve growth

increase circulation

Rosemary essential oil, like peppermint essential oil (which is also used to promote hair growth), improves circulation. As a result, it may prevent hair follicles from being starved of blood supply, causing them to die and resulting in hair loss.

In addition to promoting hair growth, rosemary essential oil is used to prevent premature greying and dandruff. It may also help with an itchy or dry scalp.

Do studies back up the claims?

Some scientific evidence suggests that rosemary may be beneficial to nerve tissue.

In one study, carnosic acid, an active ingredient in the plant, healed tissue and nerve damage. This ability to regenerate nerve endings may also rejuvenate nerves in the scalp, potentially restoring hair growth.

More recent research indicates that rosemary directly aids in the prevention of hair loss. One 2015 trialTrusted Source compared the essential oil to minoxidil, also known as Rogaine. Both were tested on human subjects suffering from androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness).

The results showed that rosemary essential oil worked just as well as minoxidil. During the procedure, it was more effective than minoxidil in alleviating the side effect of itchy scalp.

Yet another study

A reliable source of rosemary leaf extract (not essential oil) demonstrated that it stimulated hair growth. This happened when testosterone caused hair loss (as in pattern baldness). However, this study was conducted on mice.

Two separate clinical reviews — one from 2010Trusted Source and one from 2011 — both acknowledge rosemary's potential for hair growth. The former cites a study that found essential oils to be effective in regrowing hair in people with alopecia. One of these essential oils was rosemary.

In the latter review, rosemary essential oil was described as a hair loss restorative. This was due to its circulation-improving properties.
